WARNING

Recently a car parked in a public car park was being driven away when the driver noticed a sticker on the rear window of the car. The driver took it off after they got home and found it to be a receipt for petrol. Luckily the driver’s companion had told the driver not to stop, fearing it could be someone waiting for the driver to get out of the car.

BEWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED:

You walk across the car park, unlock your car and get inside, you start the engine put it into reverse and when you look into the rear-view mirror to back out of your space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, you stop and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view.   When you reach the back of your car; that is when the car jackers appears out of nowhere, jumps into your car and takes off.  And guess what? Your purse, wallet, personal details and house keys could still be in the car.  So now the car jacker has your car, your home address, your money, and your keys.  Your home and your whole identity are now compromised!

Police advice is to lock your doors and drive away if you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window and remove the paper later.  Please forward this to friends and family.

One of our Ringmaster contacts forwarded this information - A lady received
a phone call from a man speaking with a foreign accent stating she had
over-paid her council tax, due to the property having been wrongly banded.
He then asked for her bank account details, so that the "refund" could be
made by bank transfer. This is believed to be a "scam" and we remind people
to be careful with their personal details and not to unecessarily give such
information out to unverified individuals.

We have had several reports of phone calls received allegedly from the Pensions
department stating extra fuel money was due to be received and asking for dates
of birth and bank details of the recipient. This is not a genuine call as these
details would not be required by the Department of Work and Pensions.
Please be very careful and do not give out bank details and other personal
information over the phone unless you are sure that it is a legitimate call.

Due to the rising cost in oil, thefts of fuel from vehicles and garden oil tanks
still continues to be an issue nationally. Although not as many have been
reported it is still a cause for concern.

We strongly advise people to take time out to carry out a comprhensive review of
their external and garden security provision. Also, where possible, garage your
vehicle. This may therefore assist prevent such crime.

There has been an increase in the number of reported garden thefts in and
around Northallerton. Items stolen vary considerably but all thefts appear
to be opportunistic. In order to reduce the likelihood of garden crime
either lock away or lock down items of value, use security lighting and
prevent access to the rear of your properties by locking gates where
possible.

Please be aware that North Yorkshire Police have employed an external agency
to conduct customer surveys on their behalf.  These surveys select people
randomly and may even include people who are ex-directory and have not
directly contacted the police recently.
The usual rules apply to these types of call; do not divulge too much
personal information and if in doubt, ask for a staff I.D. and contact
number, then contact North Yorkshire Police to confirm the caller is
genuine.
